The Shape of Design

Midnight, it's midnight and right now I feel the urge to write a new article for my blog. The first real article about something beautiful I just discovered. It's the Shape of Design.

The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero started out as an idea in his head and has been funded by kickstarter. It has turned out to be a must read for anyone who has something to do with design.

It's not a manual, nor a bible. It's something that hopes to increase mutual understanding about what design is and what it can do. I wrote a short introduction on what you can expect in just the first few pages:

Design is communication and communication can be achieved through process. This process is the shape of design. Why we do it, is for the sake of communicating something. This means that every time it communicates, it gains more value. How we do it can be done in many ways, that's why design is so interesting and versatile. To know what you want to say and why this is important is one half, the other half depends on many variables.

This is one of the many books I hope to read on such matters and I just started on this one. I hope you read along and get inspired or infused with understanding just as me.

Currently I am thinking of adding a library section to this website, that will feature books or websites that have inspired me (apart from the fantasy books I read for pure joy).

update: To get a sneak peak of the content inside the book, watch this conference at which Frank Chimero talks about the Shape of Design. This was before he even started the Kickstarter project. The video both gives insight and complements the book.
